Two unidentified persons attacked the Indonesian consulate general in Sydney with red spray paint early Sunday.
Consul General Yayan GH Mulyana said on Monday that CCTV footage showed that the building was vandalized by two people "wearing caps and covering their faces [making it] difficult to identify [them]."
Yayan said the motive behind the vandalism was unclear, but he assumed it was related to the Free Papua Movement. "On Aug. 15, there was a global Free West Papua Movement that was observed in Canberra, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin," he said as quoted by tempo.co.
The Indonesian consulate in Sydney covers New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia.
Yayan added that red paint had been sprayed from the gate up to the façade of the building, while the CCTV footage showed that the incident occurred on Sunday at around 1 a.m. local time. He also said that the case had been reported to the local police and the Australian Foreign Ministry representative office in New South Wales.
Yayan said the Indonesian government had asked the ministry to thoroughly investigate the incident and enforce the law.
According to Yayan, the incident did not disrupt Indonesian independence celebrations on Monday, which was attended by at least 200 people.
