rade Minister Thomas Lembong said on Tuesday that Indonesia would import between 200,000 and 300,000 beef cattle this year to deal with a scarcity in supply that has inflated meat prices in several regions.

'€œFor the rest of this year, we will probably import between 200,000 and 300,000 beef cattle. We have decided this but it is still in process,'€ Thomas said as quoted by Antara news agency.

However, Thomas did not mention the names of countries from where the beef would be sourced.

Thomas explained that the import decision was part of the government'€™s effort to eradicate hoarding practices that had caused the soaring beef prices.

'€œWe are ready to add more supply to the market so the hoarders will think twice. With more supply, the price will go down and those hoarders will suffer heavy financial losses,'€ he said.

Thomas said his office would coordinate with the Agriculture Ministry to ensure that the import quota was in line with domestic need.

Since last week, beef traders have been on strike protesting the high retail and wholesale price of beef.

According to recent data, the price of beef went up to Rp 120,000 (US$8.60) per kilogram from Rp 110,000 per kg after the Idul Fitri holiday in July. (ika)(+++)
