Antara news agency reported on Tuesday that the Communication and Information Ministry had banned the 22 websites. The ministry explained that these websites were had been banned because they had violated the country's copyright law on distributing Indonesian pirated movies.
The 22 sites in question are ganool.com, nontonmovie.com, bioskops.com, ganool.ca, kickass.to, thepiratebay.se, downloadfilmbaru.com, ganool.co.id, 21filmcinema.com, gudangfilm.faa.im, movie76.com, isohunt.to, cinemaindo.net, ganool.in, bioskop21.net, unduhfilm21.net, bioskopkita.com, downloadfilm.com, comotin.net, movie2k.ti, unduhmovie.com and 21sinema.com.
However, the day after the banning, the Post found that all these websites can still be accessed.
Communication and Information Minister Rudiantara said in a press conference on Tuesday that the ban followed reports that illegal websites were distributing Indonesian films from the Indonesian Film Producers Association.
He also said that the ban was part of the government's effort to eradicate copyright infringement.
'The government is ready to protect the work of Indonesian artists,' he said.
Meanwhile, Law and Human Rights Affairs Minister Yassona Laony, who was also present at the press conference, said that the protection of copyrights was necessary to encourage the development of the creative economy. (ika)(++++)
