he Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday sentenced former lawmaker from the Democratic Party Sutan Bhatoegana to 10 years in prison and fined him Rp 500 million (US$36,072) as the panel of judges found him guilty in the corruption case. The sentence is one year lighter than what the prosecutors demanded.
'We state that the defendant Sutan Bhatoegana is found guilty for committing corruption,' said presiding judge Artha Theresia, when reading the verdict on Wednesday.
Sutan has already made an appeal to a higher court.
He was accused of accepting bribes in return for expediting the deliberation of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry budget for the 2012-2013 period.
He made headlines in January when his name was mentioned at the graft trial of former Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKKMigas) head Rudi Rubiandini.
Acting commissioner of the Corruption Eradication Commission Johan Budi said that his institution accepted the verdict.
'Usually, if the sentence is two or three years lighter than the prosecutors' demand, we will not appeal to the higher court,' said Johan as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Johan declined to comment further on the case. (bbn)(++++)
