Pearl, the Ocean Gem
Pearls have long been a symbol of absolute beauty and an expensive substance that can benefit skin in unbelievable ways.
Some cultures have used it to preserve beauty. Chinese women, for example, used to drink pearl dust mixed with drinks or food, a tradition that dates back to thousands of years ago.
Inspired by ancient tradition, Lluvia Spa uses pearls for exfoliation and moisturizing cream in their pearl spa treatment. The spa offers a unique combination of pearl with natural ingredients in a series of head-to-toe beauty treatments.
Lluvia's marketing manager Ngurah Astawa said the treatment was the most popular on its menu, especially with Asian guests. 'Guests believe this treatment can result in fairer skin, and of course, a more youthful look,' he said.
Ngurah said the dust was collected in the jewelry making process as a result of scrubbing imperfect-shaped pearl. The dust is later mixed with natural ingredients, such as rice and other ingredients, for the spa products.
'We use only seawater pearl that is farmed in Nusa Tenggara. Our product is locally made and contains 25 percent pearl,' he explained.
The session starts with a footbath using salt for exfoliation and lime as an antibacterial. Guests will experience a 45-minute therapeutic massage in an exquisite spa room overlooking a lush garden behind a large sliding glass-door.
The aim of this massage session is to release tension in muscles so the skin can absorb the nutrition from the pearls. Pearl dust, mixed with crushed rice, can exfoliate dead skin cells and its natural antioxidants can nourish skin.
As a perfect ending, guests can immerse themselves in a bath full of flower petals while enjoying a glass of healthy soymilk and listening to the soothing sounds of music.
Gold for Glowing Skin
Today, gold beauty treatments are available in some upscale spas at affordable prices. Be treated like Cleopatra at Bali's Gold Dust Beauty Lounge.
There are four beauty treatments available. All uses 24k gold flakes. The most popular one is the 24k Gold Leaf Facial, where guests receive a series of face treatments and a light massage on the face, neck and shoulders, ending with a pure 24k gold leaf mask.
The gold mask is put on the face for 30 minutes after cleansing to let the skin absorb the particles.
'Twenty-four-carat gold leaf will work on your skin for the next 30 days, so it is really good to do the face treatment once a month for maximum results,' said the Lounge's beauty consultant, Louise Ashton.
Another facial offer is the 24k Gold Collagen Facial, which uses a mix of 24k gold and collagen ingredients from the ocean, hyaluronic acid, seaweed derivatives and other minerals. 'Unlike 24k gold leaf mask, this one is more moisturizing,' Ashton said.
Gold Dust Beauty Lounge also offers an eye treatment using 24k gold collagen, as well as different massages using gold dust and spices as well as rose petals infused in oil. Guests can also buy them to use at home.
