resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo on Sunday visited the Tengah Market in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, which was devastated by a fire on Friday evening.
President Jokowi and his entourage observed ruins of kiosks and shop houses burned down in the fire. During the visit, the President took an opportunity to take selfies together with local journalists and residents.
President Jokowi made a work visit to Pontianak from Friday evening to Sunday, which was partly aimed at opening the 2015 Khatulistiwa Carnival as the closing of the national celebration of the Indonesian Independence Day's 70th anniversary.
Citing temporary investigation data, Pontianak Mayor Sutarmidji said 55 shop houses and 157 kiosks were burned down during the fire in the Tengah Market on Friday evening.
He said the Pontianak administration was currently registering and calculating losses owners of shop houses and kiosks had experienced due to the fire incident.
Sutarmidji said the administration would help the shop houses and kiosk owners obtain building permits (IMB) for free.
'We hope this can help them build their shop houses and kiosks again, which were completely destroyed during the fire,' he said as quoted by Antara. (ebf)
