he Indonesian Military (TNI) denied ownership on Tuesday of thousands of pieces of ammunition found at Soekarno-Hatta Airport.
TNI spokesman Maj. Gen. Endang Sodik said the force had not ordered ammunition directly from producers abroad.
'We purchase through [the government to government] mechanism, not individually. The TNI is under the supervision of the Defense Ministry,' Endang said on Tuesday.
He said the TNI also did not possess the weapons that could be loaded with the seized ammunition as the military only used weapons produced by state-owned weaponry producer PT Pindad.
Airport authorities found on Sunday thousands of pieces of illegal ammunition of various shapes and sizes that were to be delivered to Jayapura, Papua on a commercial flight.
The illegal bullets were found by two police officers who spotted an employee of PT Dima Cargo Kunciran, M. Sumadi, packing the bullets. He said that the package was ordered by a TNI officer in Papua. The final destination was West Papua, he said.
As Sumadi failed to provide shipment documents for the bullets, he was later reported to the airport authorities.
