According to Mentawai Resort Police head AKBP Reko Indro Sasongko, the surfer, 54-year-old Ronald Stephen Schneider, died on Tuesday at approximately 6.10 p.m.
"He died on site while surfing after a wave slammed him into the rocks," Reko told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
Schneider travelled to Mentawai through travel agent PT Latitude Nol. His body is currently being kept in Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital and is being prepared to be sent to Australia.
At least 200 visitors are currently surfing in various locations in the Mentawai Islands, enjoying big-wave season. (kes)
