The city administration planned to purchase 19 automatic tow trucks to enforce on-street parking regulations, Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said on Thursday.
"We are going to continue curbing illegal parking all across the city. That's why we plan to purchase additional tow trucks," Ahok said.
According to Ahok, the purchase will be made using an e-catalog in the National Procurement Agency (LKPP), "for a faster process."
Currently, the Jakarta Transportation Agency only has 42 tow trucks consisting of 14 automatic tow trucks, two large tow trucks and 26 manual tow trucks. According to Ahok, the price of one automatic tow truck is Rp 2.5 billion (US$178,638).
Illegal parking in Jakarta is subject to a Rp 500,000 fine.
"We will enforce the rule intensively all across Jakarta, especially around several areas notorious for illegal parking. If there is a resident who owns a car but doesn't have a proper garage and parks the car in random locations, we will tow the car," Ahok said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Ahok also reminded car owners and motorists to always park their vehicles in designated areas. (nov)
