aritime Affairs and Fishery Minister Susi Pudjiastuti on Saturday inaugurated 386 bachelor and 19 masters graduates in fisheries, calling on them not to work abroad because they are needed to exploit the great potential of fisheries in the country.

'€œI want you all working in your home country. Assist the government in carrying out its work,'€ the minister said in her speech at the Fishery Higher Institute (STP) as quoted by tempo.co in Jakarta.

Susi said that although Indonesia had great potential to utilize its maritime resources due to having one of the longest coastlines in the world, the Indonesian fishing industry only ranks third among Southeast Asian countries. Meanwhile, most fishermen live in poverty.

Susi said that she would give high priority to STP graduates who want to work in her ministry.

The minister, who used to work in the fishing industry, has received wide appreciation for her seriousness in developing the fishing sector, particularly for her tough stance on foreign fishing boats captured while illegally fishing in Indonesian waters.

Dozens of the illegal fishing boats have been sunk in recent months. (bbn)(++++)
