Swiss tourist dies at Mount Ijen

A Swiss national died during a hike to Mount Ijen's crater in Bondowoso, East Java, on Tuesday.

Johan Joseph Brunner, 68, began climbing the mountain at dawn on Tuesday with his wife Thoma Marlise Brunner, 63, and local guide Pak Nik.

After hiking for one hour, they decided to descend to Paltuding base camp due to thick haze. Afterwards, Brunner suddenly collapsed.

"When the group climbed down to Paltuding, the victim was carried using a sulfur cart and immediately taken to the nearest hospital. When examined, he was already dead," said Joko Suprayitno, who drove the victim and his wife.

According to Mrs Brunner, her husband was in good health during the hike.

The victim's body is currently being kept at the Hoo Tong Bio Chinese Temple and is expected to be cremated.

"The plan is to cremate him here. We are still waiting to hear from his children," said Joko. (kes)(++++)
