US presidential candidate Donald Trump was campaigning in New York on Thursday when, at the end of his speech, he introduced to the crowd Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) speaker Setya Novanto.

'The speaker of the House of Indonesia '¦ he's here to see me. Setya Novanto, one of the most powerful men and a great man,' said Trump as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.

Setya was in New York to speak at the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament held by the International Parliamentary Union (IPU). He went with fellow legislators, including DPR deputy speaker Fadli Zon.

'His whole group is here to see me today, and we will do great things for the US,' said Trump, before asking Setya, 'Is that correct?'

'Yes,' Setya replied.

The meeting itself was incidental. The head of the DPR's chief administrative division Yohannes Tahapari explained to tempo.co on Friday that 'there was no official schedule for the meeting [with Trump]. But it's normal [to just have] a meeting between politicians.'

During their brief interaction, Trump asked Setya about what Indonesians thought of him: 'Do they like me in Indonesia?'
