eople living in Jakarta and its satellite cities ' Bogor, Depok, Bekasi and Tangerang ' have been warned to prepare for the longer dry season by using clean water in moderation.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics agency (BMKG) has said that the drought will continue in Jakarta and its surrounding areas until November or December. The rainy season usually begins in September or October.
The prolonged dry season has been attributed to the El Nino phenomena.
'The El Nino occurs in the Pacific Ocean at the central part of the equator. It affects air circulation in Indonesia. Water vapor that usually causes the rain is pushed east,' BMKG head Mulyono Rahadi Prabowo said as quoted by kompas.com on Saturday.
In North Jakarta, the prolonged drought is expected to cause crop failures in around 15 hectares of rice fields out of a total of 405 hectares in Rorotan, Cilincing, said head of Fisheries, Agriculture and Food Security Agency Una Rusmana recently.
Five districts in Bekasi regency have also been affected by the drought. (bbn) (++++)
