Sept. 3, p1.
The National Mandate Party (PAN) announced on Wednesday that it would join the ruling coalition of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo, a move expected to improve the government's relationship with the House of Representatives. PAN chairman Zulkifli Hasan, who is also chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), said that the decision would create political stability at a time of a national economic downturn.
'We unanimously declared to the President that PAN would join [the government]. PAN had previously stated it supported [the government] and now we declare our decision to join the government, to support all government programs for the interests of the nation and the Indonesian people,' Zulkifli told a press conference at the State Palace after a meeting with Jokowi.
After the meeting, which was also attended by pro-government Hanura Party chairman Wiranto, who acted as mediator, Zulkifli denied that there was any deal for Cabinet seats behind PAN's move.
'PAN put forward the politics of nationalism, just as the President said. We did not discuss anything related to the Cabinet,' Zulkifli said.
Although Zulkifli said all of PAN's executives and members, including its veterans, had given consent for the move, Zulkifli refused to elaborate on the response of the party's cofounder Amien Rais, who is also Zulkifli's in-law.
Your comments:
OK, he's strengthened his powerbase, but what about his power, or lack of it? Is he really in charge now? Or is his party boss Megawati really in charge now? Or ' well, who is really in charge?

How is the PAN chairman almost simultaneously standing next to Donald Trump signing his pledge of allegiance in New York?
This man can be everywhere! He can be in KIH, KMP and Jakarta and New York at the same time!

And who does he think is going to believe his dubious statement? Why is he bothering to say it? If he doesn't agree with his party's move from the opposition to the government then he can just resign.
I fully agree and they are totally quite naive. If the PAN elites are lacking power, they should work harder to take over the power.

'A verbal somersault only an Indonesian politician can execute.' They are breathtaking to watch and never cease to amaze with the defiance of logical gravity. This one, however, is gold medal quality.

A verbal somersault only an Indonesian politician can execute: We are in team A, but we have not left team B. Not surprisingly, this circus performer is the same fellow who got a good bollocking from Harrison Ford on forestry destruction when he was forestry minister.

We want to create reassurance for the economy. Therefore, we have joined the government, but we haven't left the opposition.
Reassurance, Indonesian style....

He is similar with Amin Rais and his inconsistency. Nobody believes in him.
