President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo has appointed Willem Rampangilei as the head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), replacing Syamsul Maarif, an official said on Monday.

'€œThe appointment is a part of the normal flow of things because Syamsul has been serving as BNPB head for long enough,'€ State Secretary Pratikno said as quoted by kompas.com.

Currently, Willem serves as deputy to the coordinating minister for human development and culture.

Willem, 60, is also a retired commander who served at Lantamal VIII naval base in Manado, North Sulawesi, and a former head of the hydrography and oceanography agency with the Indonesian Navy.

During his career in the Navy, Willem was assigned several important roles including Indonesian Military assessor in New York. (nov)(++++)
