President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has called for faster construction of mass transportation in Jakarta to immediately ease the daily traffic gridlock.
'Don't cause any delays. We have to immediately address the acute traffic congestion in the capital city,' said President Jokowi at a ceremony for the turning of the sod on the Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Jakarta on Wednesday.
With the launch of the LRT construction, the city currently has two major public transportation projects on the go. The other project is the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) from Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to the Hotel Indonesia roundabout in Central Jakarta.
Currently, Jakarta has two main public transportation systems: state-owned PT Commuter Jabodetabek that connects Jakarta and its satellite cities ' Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi ' with railway networks and city-owned PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) buses that serve inner-city commuters.
President Jokowi, however, stressed that the development of public transportation would not only be facilitated in Java. 'Later this month, I will also officially open construction of railway networks in Sulawesi,' he said, adding that other railway networks will also be developed in Papua.
Jokowi said that he was originally scheduled to officiate the opening of the Sulawesi railway project in August, but he delayed the event to allow the developer time to construct several kilometers of the project first to make sure that the project would be possible.
Regarding the railway project in Papua, the President said that a feasibility study was being done and that construction was expected to start next year.
'I highlight this so that people know there is not only [development happening] in Java. Its just that [all major projects] need to go through certain steps,' Jokowi said. (bbn)(++++)
