tate-Owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno has said anumber of state-owned enterprises will set up a consortium to develop theJakarta-Badung medium-speed train project as demanded by President Joko '€œJokowi'€Widodo.

The minister stressed that the consortium would continue the project without using the state budget.

'€œWe are finalizing the establishment of a consortium tasked to develop the Jakarta-Bandung train project,'€ Rini said as quoted by kompas.com after accompanying Jokowi to the groundbreaking ceremony for the Light Rail Transit system in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Although Jokowi has said that the project will be for a medium-speed train instead of a high-speed train, Rini said that cost for both types of trains was pretty much the same.

'€œWe are still in the process of analyzing the cost of a high-speed and medium-speed train,'€ said Rini, adding that there were only minor price differences.

Meanwhile, the Transportation Ministry estimated that the medium-speed train project would cost Rp 30 trillion (US$2.12 billion), far below the estimated cost for the high-speed train, which was set at Rp 70 trillion.

Railway director general at the Transportation Ministry Hermanto said in a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday that the medium-speed train had a maximum speed of 200 kilometers per hour with an estimated traveling time of one hour from Jakarta to Bandung. (nov/bbn)
