The Tourism Ministry and Indonesian Tourism Promotion Agency will organize a 5 kilometer race along the road near the East Flood Canal in East Jakarta on Sunday to promote the area as a new tourist attraction.

Promotional head of the man-made tourist spot at the Tourism Ministry, Hendri Karnoza, said on Wednesday that the race, officially known as BKT 5K Festival, was a race to support the culinary facilities developed along the East Flood Canal (BKT).

The culinary companies include micro, small and medium enterprises.

'€œNext year, we will organize a merrier event that could further boost tourism in the area,'€ said Hendri as reported by tribunnews.com.

Besides the race, the event would also be highlighted with a number of activities including a multi-product bazar, entertainment and door prizes like motorcycles and electronic goods.

Race participants will be grouped into three categories, men, women and children

The organizers of the event said there was a Rp 3.5 million (US$ 238.74) prize for the adult race champions, a Rp 2.5 million prize for the runner ups and Rp 1.5 for third place. Meanwhile, for the children, the champion will get Rp 2.5 million, the runner up will get Rp 1.5 million and third place will get Rp 1 million.

The construction of the 23.5 kilometer East Flood Canal was started when the city was under the leadership of Sutiyoso and was completed by the Fauzi Bowo administration.

The East Flood Canal is the city'€™s pilot project for better treatment of rivers in the city. Currently, many residents use rivers as a place for dumping trash. Thirteen major rivers flow through the capital city. (bbn) (++++)
