Two more Indonesians have lost their lives after a stampede in Mina during the annual haj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, an official said on Thursday.
"We have just left Al Jisr Hospital in Mina together with Religious Minister and [the ministry's] haj director general to check the situation with the victims. As of 4 p.m. [local time] we have identified three Indonesian pilgrims as having died in the incident," said Foreign Ministry director for the protection of Indonesian nationals and entities abroad Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, quoting deputy Indonesian Ambassador for Saudi Arabia Sunarko.
Two of the victims were Hamid Atuwi from Surabaya, East Java, and Saiyah from Batam, Riau. The identity of the third victim has yet to be reported, kompas.com reported.
Based on the latest data, the death toll of the Mina stampede has reached 717, with 863 others injured. The majority of the dead were pilgrims from African countries and Egypt. (ags)
