aryono, 25, was beaten by a crowd of residents in Cipinang, East Jakarta, on Thursday after fleeing the Podomoro toll road gate in North Jakarta where he paid the toll fee using a counterfeit Rp 50,000 note and almost hit a toll-gate officer.

He panicked after two toll-gate officers accused him of using fake money, he said. He then sped up after a police patrol car began chasing him. However, near his house, he was caught and beaten by local residents who mistook him for a thief.

'€œI feel fortunate that there were police. I would have died if they were not there,'€ Waryono said as quoted by wartakotalive.com, adding he did not know that his money was fake.

Meanwhile, North Jakarta Police spokesman Comr. Sungkono said that the police were currently investigating whether Waryono was involved in a counterfeit money making syndicate.
