Indonesia is eying to become a non-permanent member of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in 2019 and has started lobbying the European Union (EU) countries to support the move, stated Vice President Jusuf Kalla at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday.
Since Friday, Kalla has attended bilateral meetings with several EU countries including Latvia, Bulgaria, Croatia and the Netherlands, accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi and Indonesia's permanent representative to the UN, Desra Percaya.
According to Kalla, Indonesia's presence in the council is very important since it will allow the country to take part in UN policy making.
"For Indonesia, the UN can be a place where we can participate in preserving world peace, justice and human rights. We can also call on the UN reformation, such as equal status between UN members, which include eliminating veto rights, and how to create a stronger organization," said Kalla as quoted by kompas.com.
