Thousand Islands Police arrest two men on drug charges

Thousand Islands Police have arrested two men, Irwin Agustin and Yulianto, for alleged possession of crystal methamphetamine.

Thousand Islands Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. John Weynard Hutagalung said on Friday that both suspects were arrested in their rented house on Jl. Raya Cilincing in North Jakarta, together with 3.22 grams of crystal methamphetamine. John said that the police had not concluded whether the two men were users or dealers.

Previously, law enforcement head of Jakarta Water Police division Comr. Edi Guritno said that drug dealers were starting to target tourists in the Thousand Islands regency.

'€œThe dealers sell drugs to tourists and ship crews,'€ said Edi on Wednesday. Two drug dealers were also arrested in Kampung Yanis in West Jakarta in early September.

When arrested, Roy and Aziz Pranolo, alleged drug dealers, were in possession of 5g of crystal methamphetamine. They told police that one 0.1g package of the narcotic sold for Rp 200,000 (US$13.57) on Tidung Island and Harapan Island, Edi said.

Roy and Aziz were arrested after the police received information that drugs were often delivered to Thousand Islands regency from Muara Angke in North Jakarta. '€œWe are still investigating the drug networks in Thousand Islands,'€ Edi explained.

Thousand Islands Regent Budi Utomo said that the number of tourist arrivals there was increasing. According to the regent, about seven thousand tourists visited Tidung Island each weekend. '€œWe have prevented drugs from coming to the islands,'€ said Budi. (nov/bbn)
