An official has said that the permit for the reclamation in the Jakarta bay was issued by then governor Fauzi Bowo in September 2012, one month before he was replaced by Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo, an official said on Thursday.

Head of Infrastructure and Environment Division at the City Development Planning Agency Tri Rahmad stressed that Jakarta Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama only issued a '€œprinciple permit'€ in late 2014, which was a follow up of Gubernatorial Regulation No. 121/2012 on the spatial management of the reclamation in northern Jakarta.

'€œSo the permit is based on the gubernatorial regulation issued in 2012,'€ Tri said during a hearing with members of the City Council'€™s Zoning and Isles special committee at the City Council Building on Thursday as reported by kompas.com.

Bestari Barus, a member of the special committee, said that Fauzi could not have made such a decision that would have such a long-term impact in its implementation, when his term was almost expired.

Thursday'€™s hearing was attended by a number of city administration officials, including City Spatial Agency head Iswan Achmadi, City Maritime Agency head Darjamuni and representatives of North Jakarta Municipality and Thousand Islands regency.

Previously, Ahok said that his administration would go ahead with the reclamation plan although it was protested by environmentalists and the Indonesian Traditional Fishermen'€™s Union (KNTI). Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti also called on the city administration to look into the environment impact analysis (Amdal) of the project.

A number of environmentalists said that the reclamation would have negative impacts to the environment in the reclaimed sea and its surrounding area, while the fishermen said that they would become the first victims of the reclamation because it would be more difficult to catch fish. (bbn)
