overnor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has warned that Jakarta could be submerged in 10 years unless the city reclaimed new land off the north coast.
Ahok said that the development of 17 man-made islets was necessary to counter land subsidence.
'If we do nothing, Jakarta will be underwater in 10 years due to global warming, which results in a rising sea level. All delta cities will be underwater,' Ahok told reporters at City Hall on Thursday.
He pointed out that many countries had reclaimed land, such as the Netherlands, Singapore, and Dubai in response to land subsidence.
'Land reclamation will also help fishermen, because we are closing the bay, therefore we can have more freshwater when it's complete,' Ahok said.
Reclamation of the 17 islets will not close the bay. However, Dutch consultants at the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) program said that a giant sea wall, which would close the bay, may provide a solution to land subsidence, and provide freshwater. The planned 17 islets are not formally part of the NCICD program.
