AKARTA: An officer with the Menteng Police opened fire on a 41-year-old man, identified only as ML, who reportedly went berserk in a fast food restaurant in Sarinah, Central Jakarta, on Friday.

Menteng Police'€™s criminal unit head Adj. Comr. Ridwan said the incident took place at 6:22 a.m. when ML arrived at the restaurant'€™s counter. For no apparent reason he became upset and started shouting '€œWho'€™s in charge?'€

The man then threw a cash register at a restaurant staff member before smashing the glass front door with his fist. ML then left the restaurant but returned soon after with a sickle in his hand.

Ridwan said an officer who arrived in the scene had no option other than to shoot the man after he resisted arrest.

'€œHe has been detained at the Menteng Police office,'€ Ridwan said, adding that ML was believed to have previously engaged in similar behavior in the Menteng area in the past.
