The Jakarta Police estimate that 55,000 people will converge on the Gelora Bung Karno sports stadium on Sunday to watch the final match of the President's Cup, a top police officer said on Saturday.
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian said that based on police estimates, around 35,000 supporters from Bandung-based Persib soccer club would go to the Senayan area to watch the final match against Palembang-based Sriwijaya.
Around 2,000 supporters of Sriwijaya are also expected at the stadium on Sunday.
"Ticket boxes will sell 10,000 tickets tomorrow. We estimate there will be 50,000 to 55,000 people at the stadium on match day," Tito said on Saturday as reported by kompas.com.
Due to a potentially big crowd on Sunday, Tito has urged Jakartans to avoid the Senayan area.
Police officers have been deployed since Saturday and will focus on the Senayan area after the Car Free Day ends at noon. The President's Cup is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
"We urge people not to plan any activities in the Senayan area starting from noon to midnight because many supporters will swarm the area," he said. (rin)(++++)
