T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested a House of Representatives lawmaker for allegedly accepting a multibillion rupiah bribe during an operation in Jakarta on Tuesday night.

Acting deputy KPK chairman Indriyanto Seno Adji confirmed the arrest, saying that the lawmaker was arrested along with six others. He added that the KPK would reveal details about the arrest on Wednesday morning.

'€œI can confirm that we have made an arrest. We have arrested seven people. It is connected to a case implicating a House member,'€ he said.

Indriyanto, who is a prominent legal expert from the University of Indonesia (UI), said the arrestees would undergo intensive questioning at KPK headquarters in Kuningan, South Jakarta, before the antigraft body announced their legal statuses on Wednesday.

'€œAccording to the law, we have 24 hours to question them with regard to the case,'€ he added.

The lawmaker, who is reportedly Dewi Yasin Limpo of the pro-government Hanura Party, is a member of a powerful political dynasty in South Sulawesi, where her brother Syahrul Yasin Limpo is serving a second term as governor.

Syahrul did not return The Jakarta Post'€™s calls for confirmation.

However, House Hanura faction chairman Syarifuddin Suding said he was aware of the arrest and had contacted Dewi for confirmation, but to no avail as her cell phone was unreachable on Tuesday night.

'€œSeveral faction members tried to call but [her] number was not active,'€ he said.

Dewi is a member of House Commission VII, which oversees energy and minerals.
