The Bali Tourism Service estimates that the region suffered Rp 45 billion (US$3.29 million) in lost tourism due to Mount Barujari's erupting in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, affecting flights in and out of Bali over the last eight days.
Bali's head of tourism Agung Yuniartha said that 25,000 foreign tourists scrapped their visits to Bali while Ngurah Rai airport was on-again-off-again during the eruptions from Tuesday Nov. 3 to Monday Nov. 9. Canceling their trips of course meant canceling their hotel reservations.
"The stop-start approach resulted in approximately Rp 45 billion in losses. Overall, the tourism sector was hit the most. Many reserved hotel rooms have been cancelled. Each day, potential losses amount to $1,500" said Agung to Antara news agency on Monday in Kuta, Bali.
Moreover, he further said, some international events initially scheduled to run in the Island of the Gods have also been pulled.
During the airport closure, at least 692 scheduled flights flying domestic and international routes were cancelled, leading to thousands of passengers being left stranded.
Even when Bali airport reopened on Monday, some international airlines such as Jetstar and Virgin Air Australia were still suspending their services to and from Bali.
Meanwhile, domestic flights to and from Bali have returned to normal, except for the Bali-Lombok route as the airport there is still closed. (ags)(+)
