A moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck Bantul regency in Yogyakarta on Wednesday night, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reports.
No casualties have been reported since the quake struck at 6:45 p.m. local time. Its epicenter was located at 8.97 degrees south, 110.19 degrees east and 93 kilometers deep, some 120 kilometers southwest of Bantul, the BMKG recorded.
According to Yogyakarta resident Sugiarto, the quake 'felt strong at first and lasted for a while so did raise a bit of panic'. Yogyakarta is located 11 km north of Bantul.
'I called my relatives in Bantul and they said they felt it quite strongly over there. Some of the locals panicked and ran out to the paddy fields,' Sugiarto said.
