The technical director of production house Rexinema has revolutionized filmmaking by using Android smartphones with 4K camera resolution.
Instead of making documentaries or found-footage films that naturally allow shaky hands, Derryl Imanalie and his crew strive to make quality films with basic filmmaking devices.
Helmed by David Poernomo, the thrilling horror Cai Lan Gong was filmed using a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and, for some later scenes, the newly released Samsung Galaxy Note 5.
'I was among the first who got the Note 5 when it was released in August. Note 4 is good, but if we had a Note 5 earlier we could have made the movie even better.'
Currently a student majoring in mechatronics at Queensland University of Technology in Australia, the 22-year-old customized the camera stabilizer and drones for the purpose.
'It's like putting Hollywood in your pocket. Everyone can make their own films,' he said.
For his choice of mobile devices, Derryl considers cloud intervention the key feature he looks for in a phone, with the camera the next most important thing.
'I don't replace my phone often, and won't do anytime soon, unless Samsung releases Note 7 or something,' he quipped.

Samsung tablets
I use Samsung Galaxy S II, it's a very nice tablet. I mostly use it to watch films. It's Super AMOLED Plus screen makes films come out nicely. Besides Tab S, I have a Tab A (Samsung Galaxy Tab A) I use at school. I really like the S-pen stylus feature. I prefer to scribble on paper rather than typing, so the tablet is kind of the combination of conventional paper and typing up. As I'm studying engineering, I have formulae to write, pictures to draw and notes to write. It's really helpful.
Samsung Galaxy Note 5
I love it. There is some magic right here, possibilities right in the corner waiting to be discovered. I previously used Note 4, which is good, but I don't know what they have done to it but Note 5 is way better.
Applications
I'm not a big social media guy, although I have Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. With the quality on the Note 5's camera, obviously my photos are good too.
I have a channel on Vimeo, but I like to keep it private. I'm too lazy to share my works.
The S-note application on the phone helps us in mapping locations for shooting purpose. We can insert information on a photo or footage with the feature, jotting down quick notes with the S-pen.
Another industry going mobile is video games. I play Fallout Shelter, it's a fun strategy game on the Android. I'd rather play it on the tab because the details look great on a larger screen.
