National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti has said that the police have deployed more police officers to strengthen the security near embassies in Jakarta following terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday that killed more than 120 people.
'We have strengthened security. We have also boosted our surveillance of suspected [terrorist] networks that we have already been monitoring,' said Badrotin at Halim Perdana Kusuma airport in Jakarta on Saturday.
He said that both uniformed and plain clothes police officers had been deployed in areas near embassies.
Badrodin added that the police were also investigating possible connections between the Paris attacks and terrorist networks in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Vice President Jusuf Kalla urged relevant agencies to intensify intelligence operations to prevent possible terrorist attacks in Indonesia.
'[In the long run], we prevent radicalism through education. Now security and intelligence operations should be strengthened,' Kala said as reported by kompas.com on Saturday.
The Vice President condemned the loss of innocent lives in the Paris attacks, adding that France could learn from Indonesia's experience in dealing with terrorism as Indonesia had suffered from terrorist attacks several times in the past.
At least 120 people died in the series of attacks on Friday night in Paris. French officials also previously reported that all the attackers were believed to have died. (bbn)
