East Java'€™s Confederation of Indonesian Workers' Union (KSPI) said they accepted the UMK and decided to cancel the mass rally that had been planned for Saturday.

'€œWe accepted the [2016] UMK considering the current economic situation,'€ said the head of KSPI East Java, Sunandar, in Surabaya on Saturday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He added that the country'€™s workers still urged an evaluation of Government Regulation (PP) No. 78/2015 on minimum wages.

The new regulation, issued in October, stipulates a formulated annual wage increase that takes into account the current fiscal year'€™s inflation and gross domestic product (GDP) growth rates. It replaced the old formula that was based on a cost of living (KHL) survey of 84 basic commodities and other daily needs of workers.

Previously, workers demanded the government revoke the regulation and increase next year'€™s wages by 22 to 25 percent. They said if those demands were ignored they would stage a nationwide protest from Nov. 1 through Dec. 30. (kes)
