Black and white movie 'Siti' named Indonesia's best film

A black and white movie titled Siti, directed by Eddie Cahyono, won the Best Film award on Monday at the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI).
The movie won Best Script Writer at the Shanghai International Film Festival in June, defeating nominees from Japan, Taiwan and China in the Asia New Talent category that recognized emerging filmmakers.
It was also screened alongside Danny Boyle's much anticipated biopic Steve Jobs and Sydney Pollack's Amazing Grace at one of the most prestigious film festivals in the US, the Telluride Film Festival, in September.
The producer, Ifa Isfansyah, received the award from the Culture and Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Anies Baswedan during FFI's awards night at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE ) center in BSD City, South Tangerang, Banten.
'I want to thank my family in Yogyakarta, especially my mother whose name I used as the film's title,' said Ifa as quoted by kompas.com.
The 91-minute film portrays the life and psychological conflicts of a married woman forced to work as a karaoke hostess at Parangtritis beach in Yogyakarta. It defeated four other nominees including A Copy of My Mind, directed by Joko Anwar, and Toba Dreams, directed by Benni Setiawan. (nov/kes)
