Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama believes the regency of Thousand Islands could become a great tourist destination if only it solved the issues of power and water supply.
'It is easy to develop Thousand Islands. Just supply adequate electricity and water,' Ahok said at City Hall on Wednesday.
The governor added that his administration would allocate more funds to develop diesel power plants on a number of islands that could be developed into tourist destinations. He did not reveal the amount of budget funds to be committed to the task.
Shortages of electricity and water in the regency have become a major problem for both residents and the local tourism industry.
The electricity supply relies heavily on diesel plants, because there is no external power supply to the islands. Meanwhile, for water, the islands depend on reverse osmosis to treat groundwater into drinkable water. A number of places have begun to develop seawater desalination projects, but these are still very limited.
Ahok also invited businesspeople to carry out land reclamation and give the islands a makeover to turn them into a first-rate tourist destination. (bbn)(+)
