President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is scheduled to attend seven events during the UN Climate Conference, COP21, in Paris, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi said on Monday.
"The President has to attend about seven events. The first one is of course to participate actively in the leaders event," Retno said as quoted by Antara news agency in Paris.
According to Retno, the leaders event ' a session for heads of state ' would take place on Monday and aimed to give a political boost to the negotiations that will continue until Dec. 11, aiming for successful outcomes from COP21.
Jokowi was scheduled to attend four bilateral meetings with the leaders of the Netherlands, Norway, Serbia and Russia, added Retno.
"We're still preparing for the possibility of meeting with Russia," said Retno.
Retno said that Jokowi would attend two big events outside the COP21 context. The first would be the Mission Innovative initiative where 16 state leaders and Microsoft founder Bill Gates are scheduled to discuss renewable energy issues.
The second would be a leaders event on forests and climate change, which would involve countries with vast forests such as Norway, France, Indonesia, Brazil and others, and those committed to conducting sustainable forestry practices, added Retno.
On Tuesday, President Jokowi is scheduled to attend a bilateral meeting with Peru, at which both countries' leaders will discuss Peru's leadership in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and several issues that Indonesia will entrust to Peru during its leadership, according to Retno.
After the meeting with Peru, Jokowi is scheduled to visit the Indonesian pavilion at the COP21 venue in the Parc des Expositions du Bourget.
"In his statement, President Jokowi will mention the challenges of the forest fire situation worsened by El Niño, while at the same time he will explain our prevention efforts, fast forwards and law enforcement," said Retno. (afr)
