Indonesian ministers will depart to Japan to discuss strategic cooperation between the two countries, an official said on Thursday.

Arrmanatha Nasir, spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry, said that Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi and Defense Minister Ryamirzard Ryacudu would meet with Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and Defense Minister Gen. Nakatani, on Dec. 17.

"There are three main areas to discuss: regional, global and bilateral issues," Arrmanatha said as quoted by Antara News Agency.

Arrmanatha said the four ministers would discuss political and security development in the Asian region. They would discuss issues such as the dispute over the South China Sea, Japan's new military policy and the outcomes of November'€™s East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

One of the key outcomes from the East Asia Summit was an agreement to develop the maritime sector. The idea for such a development was proposed by Indonesia.

"Cooperation will involve efforts to create peace and stability in the region," he said.

Arrmanatha said that at the meeting, Indonesia and Japan would discuss Japan's new military policy. The new policy provides opportunities for Japan to increase its military participation at the international level.

Indonesia and Japan are active contributors to United Nations peacekeeping forces. Both countries have sent thousands of troops on global peacekeeping missions.

The ministers would also address global issues such as terrorism, radicalism and the Middle East.

Cooperation in the economic and security sectors would also be a topic for discussion among the ministers.

"We will talk about how to increase our investment and trade cooperation as well as cooperation in the defense sector in things such as joint military training, strategic industry development and technology transfer," he said.

After the meeting in Japan, Arranatha said Foreign Minister Retno would continue her trip to Seoul, South Korea, to attend a Joint Ministerial Committee with South Korea's Foreign Minister Yu Byung-se. (afr/rin)(+)
