ATAM: The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) on Friday launched four 32-meter patrol boats in Batam, Riau Islands, in an effort to prevent illegal fishing in Indonesian waters.
KKP currently claims that zero illegal fishing is taking place following the sinking of illegal fishing boats. Based on radar surveillance, only seven foreign boats are still operating in Indonesia waters.
Director general of maritime resources and fisheries supervision Asep Burhanuddin told The Jakarta Post on Friday the boats would be deployed in eastern and western regions, with two boats in each area.
The additional boats increases the number of KKP boats operating across the country to 31.
'Minister Susi Pujiastuti plans to design a mother ship for all the patrol boats next year. We hope that is realized immediately,' said Asep.
