The captain of a ferry requested help before bad weather and high waves sunk the vessel in South Sulawesi waters, an official said.
Andi Lani Salahut, the head of Bangsale Harbor Management, said on Sunday that the captain of KMP TB Maria 2 reported the ferry's predicament on Saturday afternoon.
"They asked for a rescue boat to evacuate passengers as waves reached 6 meters high. They had to turn off the engine to cope with big waves and distribute life vests to passengers," he said as quoted by newsportal tempo.co on Sunday.
The ferry, serving Kolaka and Siwa, sank in Wajo regency, 18 miles off Bangsale harbor in South Sulawesi on Saturday. It was carrying 119 passengers and crew members when large waves wash aboard.
Antara news agency reported that at least 40 people had been rescued and three were found dead. The Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) rescued 36 people while four were rescued by local fishermen.
South Sulawesi Police spokesman Sr.Comr. Frans Barung Mangera said on Sunday that the team picked up survivors in North Kolaka waters.
The survivors were admitted to nearby hospitals. He said the three victims were 9-year-old Muhammad Firdaus, a 9-month old baby and an unidentified woman in her 50s.
The search for missing passengers continued on Monday. (edn/rin)(+)
