Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Luhut Panjaitan has said that the government and security officers will keep on high alert, 'Alert No. 1', to protect strategic locations like airports against possible terrorist attacks up until the celebration of New Year's Eve.
'From now on up to the New Year's Eve celebration, we are in a condition of high alert, particularly at airports and other strategic locations,' said Luhut in Jakarta on Monday as reported by kompas.com.
According to Luhut, there is no country that is immune to possible terrorist attack, but the security officers ' the National Police, the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the State Intelligence Agency BIN) -- have worked seriously to anticipate and prevent any taking place here.
Meanwhile, National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti said in the last three days, the police have arrested nine suspected terrorists in a number of cities: Cilacap and Sukoharjo in Central Java, Mojokerto and Gresik in East Java, Tasikmalaya in West Java and in the Riau provincial capital of Pekanbaru.
'We get information from AFP [Australian Federal Police], the FBI [the US' Federal Bureau of Investigation] and Singapore [about possible threats]. Consequently we have afforded preventive efforts and imposed a high alert status,' said Badrodin.
BIN head Sutiyoso said that since the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, the Indonesian security institutions have strengthened their alertness. He said that BIN's agents all over the country are also on high alert for any possible attacks.
'BIN in the regions is in a total alert; also those [agents] overseas,' he said, adding that the participation of the people to keep alert about their surrounding areas would be the key to success in preventing any terrorist attacks. Therefore, Sutiyoso told people to report to security officers if they saw suspicious activities in their neighborhoods.
About the arrests of the alleged terrorists, National Police spokesman Ins. Gen. Anton Charliyah said that it started with two suspects known as RS and YS who were arrested in Cilacap on Dec. 18. Because of these two suspects, the police were able to arrest other suspected terrorists, including two in Tasikmalaya and the remaining ones in East Java. (bbn)(+)
