ive people in Depok, West Java, died after drinking oplosan (bootleg liquor), said a local leader.
Syamsuddin, head of neighbor unit (RT) 03, where the five victims lived, said that the residents died on different days. Enday Wijaya, 52, died last Thursday, Syarifudin, 45, died last Saturday night, while Maulana, 43, Saimin, 48, and Ahmad Miat, 58, died on Monday.
He said the oplosan the five had consumed was a mixture of Vodka and an energy drink, adding that they fell ill before dying.
'After they drank [the oplosan], they suffered from headaches and convulsions, leading to their deaths,' he said as quoted by tempo.co.
He added that the five also experienced vision impairment and excessive sweating.
'They separately bought and drank the oplosan last Thursday,' he said.
Four of the victims died before receiving hospital treatment, he said, while Ahmad died on Monday afternoon at Harapan Hospital in Depok.
Syamsuddin said he hoped the police would eradicate bootleg liquor and prosecute the sellers to avoid similar incidents from occurring again.
