President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has stressed his commitment to achieving the construction of power plants producing an additional 35,000 megawatts of electricity by 2020, or ideally a year earlier.
Jokowi said he received frequent complaints from people in certain regions where multiple daily power cuts were a common occurrence as a result of electricity shortages.
'On my visits to lots of regions, people have complained of electricity shortages,' Jokowi said during a meeting with power plant investors at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday.
Acknowledging the challenges inherent in the ambitious plan, the President said he was in constant communication with relevant ministers, adding that a contract for 600 MW had been signed in August.
During his opening remarks at the meeting, the President set out detailed updates for stakeholders and conversed with investors regarding achievable targets.
He asked that power plant construction, if possible, be finished by 2019, one year earlier than the estimated date of completion given by investors.
Jokowi said that he was aware of the issues surrounding the development of power plant construction.
'I will check them one by one. I will consolidate the targets and dates. I want to work in detail and be involved in the field,' said the President in a press statement issued by the Presidential Office.
He continued that further work would need to be done following the construction of the power plants, including the preparation of transmitters along 46,000 kilometers.
Jokowi asked for all parties involved to work hard in order to attain the target, promising to assist investors with any trouble they encountered in the construction process.
'With electricity, especially in remote areas, children will able to study at night and small businesses will be able to continue to work after dark,' he said. (bbn)
