The head of the Jakarta Police's operations bureau, Sr. Comr. Martuani Sormin, has said nine of the 1,680 churches in Greater Jakarta need special security measures ahead of and during Christmas celebrations.
'Those nine churches still have problems, related to building permits for houses of worship, from local residents in their surrounding areas,' he said as quoted by tempo.co in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Martuani refused to mention the names of those nine churches to avoid restlessness in the public. However, he made assurances that the police would provide extra security to the churches.
Martuani further said that the police would also take special measures to protect homes that were used for religious observances. Apart from houses of worship, 17 shopping malls would also be secured by the police, he added.
'The police are set to carry out Operasi Lilin Jaya (Operation Candle Jakarta) 2015 for 10 days from Dec. 24 to Jan. 2,' said Martuani.
He said the Jakarta Police would dispatch 8,978 personnel in Operasi Lilin Jaya 2015 to secure the upcoming Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations. They comprised 4,000 Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) officers, 386 Mobile Brigade personnel and 90 Indonesian Military personnel.
Meanwhile, National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti said that the police were ready to deploy 80,197 personnel for Operation Candle in areas across Indonesia.
He said the security operation would be supported by a joint security team consisting of 20,681 Indonesian Military personnel and 49,670 civil security officers.
'Those personnel will be dispatched to 1,557 security posts and 638 service posts across the nation,' said Badrodin as quoted by news agency Antara on Wednesday.
He further said that 998 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras were placed to monitor areas under threat from intolerant groups during the Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations. (cal/ebf)
