An Indonesian ecotourism community has been named a finalist in the 2016 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards.
The Jakarta-based Indonesian Ecotourism Network (Indecon), a foundation that develops ecotourism in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, among other places, will compete with Sapa O'Chau from Vietnam and Expediciones Sierra Norte from Mexico in the Community category.
Programs of sustainable tourism practice and management that maximize social and economic benefits for local people, reduce negative impacts to the environment and support the protection of cultural and natural heritage are among the selection criteria for the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards.
Run by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the competition reportedly drew applications from 62 countries across all continents. Fifteen finalists were picked to further compete in five categories, namely Community, Destination, Environment, Innovation and People.
'Tourism is a force for good, and it is by sharing best practices and educating our peers about sustainability that we can ensure the growth of our sector is managed responsibly," said World Travel & Tourism Council president and CEO David Scowsill in a press release.
The winners will be announced at the 16th WTTC Global Summit in Dallas, Texas, on April 7. (kes)
