With the advancement of technology, filmmaker Ismail Basbeth says that people should have a deeper understanding of technology in order to avoid the trap of consumerism.

'€œIf we buy and use technology efficiently, in line with our needs, that means we are users of technology, but if we just buy whatever gadgets are available in the market, then we'€™re just seen as consumers,'€ Ismail said.

However, he cannot refute the importance of the technology that supports the way people live nowadays.

'€œBack then, we had to go to an internet café just to check email. We can do that now from our phones or laptops,'€ Ismail said.

The 31-year-old also realizes the role and impact of technology in child development nowadays as they grow up in the digital era. He tries to limit the use of digital devices when he is around his 2-year-old son.

'€œI don'€™t play with my gadgets when I'€™m with him. All he knows is that the phone is used to make calls,'€ he said. '€œI'€™m trying to hold back his interaction with gadgets a little bit so that he can have more time to do other things.'€

Ismail said that technology had to some extent stopped evolving since there have not been any significant inventions in the past few years.

'€œWhat we'€™ve seen mostly is just the combination of several features. There are no huge innovations coming up anymore,'€ he said.

Ismail made his first short film in 2008. Since then, many of his film projects have been screened in prestigious international film festivals, including Busan, Tokyo, Rotterdam and Vladivostok. His third feature film, Talak 3, will be released nationwide on Feb. 4.

Oppo smartphone and social media apps

I'€™ve been using the laptop for so many years. The battery is dying; I cannot use it unless I plug it in. But I really love this laptop because it was a gift from my mother and my sisters. I used it to edit some of my films and I wrote all of my scripts with this laptop.
