EMARANG: The Central Java Health Agency is calling on local residents to carry out communal efforts to eradicate mosquito breeding grounds in an effort to contain the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue fever, chikungunya and Zika, in the province.
Agency head Yulianto Prabowo said on Friday such measures were vital amid the ongoing dengue fever outbreak in the province and many other regions in the country.
'Previously, adult mosquitoes could be killed by fumigation, but apparently not now,' he said, adding that the outbreak would likely continue until March, when the rainy season approaches its end.
In January alone, dengue fever claimed the lives of 15 Central Java residents and left 1,080 others hospitalized.
The Semarang Health Agency, meanwhile, recorded 1,628 dengue cases in 2014, with 27 fatalities. In 2015, 1,729 cases were recorded, with 20 fatalities.
