Indonesia is currently the role model of a successful country with regard to counterterrorism efforts, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said on Friday.

This was indicated by the fast response by the authorities in overcoming the Jan. 14 terrorist attacks in Jl. M.H. Thamrin, Jakarta, for which the Islamic State (IS) movement claimed responsibility, Pramono said.

"Compared to other countries, we have been able to track the [extremist] cells in all places," Pramono said as quoted by kompas.com.

Indonesia could further optimize its counter-terrorism mechanisms if lawmakers finished the discussion on the draft terrorism bill, which has just begun being deliberated, he added.

The position of Indonesia in countering terrorism has been recognized by world leaders, as President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo led a discussion session on terrorism during the ASEAN-US summit in the US from Feb. 15 to 16.

During the meeting, Jokowi shared Indonesia's experiences in countering terrorism in the biggest Muslim-majority country in the world.

In April and May, Jokowi has been invited to visit a number of countries to deliver Indonesia's point of view in the counterterrorism issue, Pramono added. (afr/bbn)
