akarta’s Elections Supervisory Agency has warned that problems in the voter database managed by the Jakarta General Elections Commission could hamper the implementation of gubernatorial elections in 2017.

The agency recorded several problems in the recent presidential and legislative elections that have apparently still not been fixed, including double entries for thousands of voters.

"There were also dead people who are still in the voter database and could appear on the voter list,” agency executive Achmad Fachrudin said on Friday.

Although the Jakarta General Elections Commission had detected the double data and the existence of entries for dead people in the database, it did not directly delete them, Achmad claimed.

There was a risk that the final voter list would be invalid, he added.

Therefore, the elections commission is advised to immediately improve the voter database to make sure the final voter list consisted only of valid voters, who number around seven million, he added.

The election commission needed to synchronize its database with the one owned by Jakarta’s Civil Registry and Demography Agency to ensure that relocation of people from one place to another would be recorded properly, he added.

As an example he pointed to the movement of people out of the Kalijodo red-light district to low-cost apartments, which needed to be recorded in the voter database.

"The election commission needs to work hard to find information and coordinate with related institutions to get valid voter data," Achmad urged.

Jakarta is scheduled to hold its gubernatorial election on Feb. 15 next year. (bbn)
