The 88th Academy Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, might well be over, but it is interesting to discover some fun facts about the winning films and crews.

Here are 10 fun facts we have gathered about the 2016 Oscars.

1. Alejandro González Iñárritu is the first back-to-back directing winner since Joseph L. Mankiewicz in 1950 and 1951. After winning an Oscar for Birdman in 2015, Iñárritu has been awarded again this year for The Revenant amid strong competition in the Best Director category.

2. Mad Max: Fury Road brings home the largest number of Oscars after winning a total of six awards in the Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Make-up and Hair, Best Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories.

3. Spotlight, which won Best Picture, is based on a series of newspaper articles by a real investigative unit at The Boston Globe. The work of the journalists at the paper garnered the Globe the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.

4. Leonardo DiCaprio finally brings home the Oscar this year for his leading role in The Revenant after previously being nominated five times. He first received an Oscar nomination for a supporting role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape back in 1993.

5. Brie Larson's outstanding performance in Room earned her an Oscar in the Best Actress category after winning the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA), the Critics Choice Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Golden Globe Awards. It is also Larson's first Oscar nomination.

6. Ennio Morricone, who won an Oscar for Best Score for The Hateful Eight, is also this year's oldest winner at 87. This is his sixth nomination and his first win. Morricone was first nominated in 1979 for his work in Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven.

7. Son of Saul, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, is the ninth Hungarian film to be nominated for the Academy Awards and the second to win the trophy after István Szabó's Mephisto in 1981.

8. Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, who received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in The Danish Girl, used to be a dancer and studied at the Royal Swedish Ballet School.

9. Prior to winning this year's Oscar for Best Cinematography for his work in The Revenant, Emmanuel Lubezki won the same award in the same category for Gravity and Birdman in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

10. English actor Mark Rylance, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the 88th Academy Awards for his role as Rudolf Abel in Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies, is better known for his theater performances and has won three Tony Awards already. He will also appear in Spielberg's upcoming film The BFG, which is based on a novel of the same title by Roald Dahl. (kes)(+)
