he Jakarta administration has canceled plans to lend orangutans to North Korea due to potential difficulties in caring for the primates.
'We will not lend orangutans to North Korea. Experts have advised us not to do so because taking care of orangutans is not easy. Any mistreatment will cause harm to the orangutans,' Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama told reporters at City Hall on Monday.
Previously, Pyongyang, a sister city to Jakarta, asked the city administration for a pair of orangutans to breed in its local zoo. The Jakarta administration agreed and had planned to send a pair from Ragunan Zoo, South Jakarta.
Ahok said the city administration would send a different animal or plant to North Korea as a replacement for the orangutans.
