The government plans to integrate all airports in Indonesia with mass transportation, such as light rail transit (LRT), buses and trains, to reduce traffic congestion in big cities within the next five to 10 years.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo announced the program on the third day of his Sumatra visit after inspecting the development of LRT Zone 1 at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Airport in Palembang.

"This year, the Lampung and Padang airport trains will be completed, while the Soekarno-Hatta and Palembang trains will be completed the following year," Jokowi said in a press statement on Thursday.

The LRT construction in Palembang started four months ago and is scheduled for completion in June 2018 before the SEA Games. The railway line will be 23 kilometers in length and will have five zones.

From Palembang, Jokowi along with Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan traveled to inspect Kualanamu International Airport in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra by train. (ags)(+)
